Against All Odds

I saw three fortune cookies recently. The first read, “The fortune you seek is in another cookie.” The second read, “You will receive a fortune. (cookie)” The message in the third read, “If your cookie is still in one piece, buy lotto.”

This week scores of people are banking on a chance. A chance on winning $500 million dollars in the lottery. When I say chance, I mean slim to nothing. I’m told there’s more chances of you having identical quadruplets than winning the lottery. There’s more chance of you being crushed to death while getting a candy bar out of a vending machine than there is of you winning the lottery. There’s more chances of an asteroid hitting Earth in 2029 than…you get the idea. Those odds are small. Chances slim. Percentage low. We need a sure thing, and we have it. Here are some certainties in this world of chance:

God hears you. Each morning you listen to my prayer as I bring my requests to you and wait for your reply. Psalm 5:3

God holds you. I give them eternal life, and they shall never perish; no one will snatch them out of my hand. My Father, who has given them to me, is greater than all. No one can snatch them out of my Father’s hand. I and the Father are one.”John 10:28

God hides you. He will cover you with his feathers, and under his wings you will find refuge. Psalm 91:4

God heals you. He forgives all my sins and heals all my diseases. 4 He ransoms me from death and surrounds me with love and tender mercies. 5 He fills my life with good things. Psalm 103:3-5

God loves all the way, all the time. There’s not a “chance” He’ll hear you, or a mere possibility He’s merciful and forgiving. He is…100%. His promises are true 100% of the time. His cross, our hope, is within reach 100% of the time. His grip has a 100% success rate at holding and keeping us.

In a world of long shot lotteries and fortune cookies, God offers, in Jesus, a sure thing…against all odds. There’s no place like hope, Stefan
