Grace Flows Down

“I like coming to this church because here you don’t start at the top and work down, you all start at the bottom and work up.” ~ A 17 year old girl at The Gathering

About 25 of us sat around in a classroom talking after the Gathering, in a group we call ,”Sermon Discussion”, but you could probably call it, “The Most Real Place on Earth.” We were near the end of class with several people still wiping tears of joy from their eyes after hearing stories of God’s grace and nearness, when the beautiful girl decided to “speak her mind.” At the Gathering, we start from the bottom and work up. Hmmm. I asked her what she meant by that. She replied with scalpel sharp insight and candor, “ Well here, I feel like I don’t have to have it all together first… and…we all have junk.” We all sat back in awe at the revelation of that comment coming from such a young observer.

They say there’s a place on the west coast of Africa in the small country of Sierra Leone where diamonds are everywhere. If you’re not careful you could actually step on one just laying on the ground. Down low. At the bottom. If you’ve ever been down low, you probably know there’s some amazing stuff down there. It’s been said that grace, like water, flows to the lowest parts. If you’re like me, you’ve seen times that certainly felt like the bottom before, and you know that those times can be greater life instructors than the rare mountaintop moments. You may feel insecure, inadequate, ashamed, or fearful. Death, panic, depression, and disillusionment may be near you. But, you are not just that. You are accepted. Never confuse your perception of yourself with the mystery that you really are accepted.

Paul writes: “The Lord said, ‘My grace is enough for you: my power is at its best in weakness.’ So I shall be very happy to make my weaknesses my special boast so that the power of Christ may stay over me” (2 Corinthians 12:9). Jesus comes not for the super-spiritual but for the wobbly and the weak-kneed who know they don’t have it all together. Remember, grace, like water, flows to the lowest parts.
